Top 10 Erasure Tunes
Fanfic, of course, is an electropop band, and it ain’t no lie: I love the genre. Probably the single greatest pioneer of the genre is Vince Clarke, who gave us three of the greatest bands in its history: Depeche Mode, Yazoo, and Erasure.
It may seem a bit odd since we’re quite a bit darker, on average, than Erasure, but even I have to admit there’s more to life than Low and Joy Division.
These are just my favorite Erasure songs, spoken as a fan.
1. Fingers & Thumbs (Cold Summer’s Day) Great music, fantastic melody, and wrenching lyrics, one of Andy’s best. One of my favorite songs, period, by any band.
2. Drama! Very pertinent words from Andy, dazzling keyboard parts, and an awesome vocal.
3. I Bet You’re Mad at Me Nightbird is my favorite Erasure album, and this is my favorite tune. It just has a haunting quality I like very much. I also love the keyboard part that Vince plays in the bridge. Genius.
4. In My Arms “I thought about you twice just then.” Gorgeous line in a gorgeous ballad. Also has the little experimental noises used to great effect on Erasure.
5. I Love You Also from Erasure. Another long tune I wish was even longer.
6. Breath of Life That jumpy keyboard riff gets me every time.
7. A Little Respect Everybody loves this song. It’s the law, and a damn good one.
8. No Doubt Did I mention Nightbird is my favorite album? Also my favorite opening to any Erasure record, with those huge multi-tracked vocals.
9. Chorus Lots of ambient noises and a huge chorus…as one might have guessed.
10. When I Start to Break It All Down (Little Loud Mix) I wasn’t in love with the production of Tomorrow’s World, standing firmly on the “Andy doesn’t need auto-tuning” camp. This is a great tune, however, and this mix in particular, IMO, lets the song shine.
Honorable Mention: Storm in a Teacup, Save Me Darling, Don’t Say You Love Me, Always (Microbots Trance Dance Mix), I Love Saturday, Stop!, Love to Hate You (“I like to read a murder mystery/I like to know the killer isn’t me”) and…yeah, pretty much everything else…
